The Alla Prima Portrait

Instructor: Philip Salamone

Sep 14, 15, 16 • 9:00 AM-4:00 PM

Concept

The objective of this workshop is to learn to make convincing, sensitive portraits that are true to life through a coherent, analytical approach to painting. While focusing on fundamentals of portrait painting in oil, you will also learn to see and understand your subject matter through proportion, form, value, and color.

Experience

Through demonstrations and one-on-one conversations, Philip will introduce a variety of topics, including creating a strong likeness with accurate drawing, value understanding based on light phenomena, color mixing, edge manipulation, and cranial structure. Using a simple step-by-step process, you will paint one six-hour portrait each of the three days. This workshop is designed for painters with some experience in oil paint, however artists with less experience who prefer to work in grisaille are encouraged to participate.
